Backpacking at Yosemite National Park offers more than 800 miles of backpacking trails to enjoy. Most of the popular hiking trails are located in Yosemite Valley, whilst passing waterfalls on your path. The trails vary from length to difficulty depending on how much experience you have and have trails for everyone.
Backpacking trails in Yosemite start from the Lower Yosemite Falls, Bridalveil Fall, Nevada and Vernal Falls, Sentinel Dome, Panorama Trail, 4-Mile Trail and Ostrander Lake.

- Always check the forecast before leaving.
- All of Yosemite is bear country. The most effective method for storing food in the wilderness is to use bear-resistant canisters.
- When hiking or backpacking at Yosemite, be sure to carry food and water, and dress appropriately
- Even though most of the trails are clearly marked, it is a good idea to have a detailed map while hiking in Yosemite.
- The park’s daily paper, Yosemite Today, lists hiking trail closures and the visitor’s centers have detailed information on each hike.
- A shuttle bus runs along the Yosemite Valley, delivering hikers and backpackers to the railheads. Tuolumne Meadows offers a huge network of hiking trails that follow mountain streams and alpine lakes, and a view of Yosemite that most people don’t see.
- Check at the visitor centers or wilderness permit stations for more information. Permits are required for overnight stays in Yosemite's wilderness.
